INTRODUCTION

Big Ground is probably one of the most popular camping fields at Glastonbury due to its close proximity to the Pyramid Stage and for its scenic views overlooking the site.

This field has been part of the Festival site premises since the very early days of its inception. It is situated at the far end tip of the Pyramid field (to the east) and west of the tree-lined hedge path – commonly known as “Muddy Lane” (which often provides an easy access point to this field).

In comparison to the adjacent Row Mead and Kidney Mead, Big Ground sits on higher ground and slopes gently towards the main stage (or rather its giant video screens). This makes it less subject to flooding if and when the heavens open up.

There is a good amount of toilet/water points nearby, and in addition to being close to the Kidz Field and William’s Green, you’ll find plenty of shops, bars and food trucks nearby. The Medical Centre (which you hopefully won’t need to use) is also just north of the field. The lack of late-night venues also means it is somewhat of a quieter area come night-time.

Keep in mind that as with the rest of the camping grounds that reside in short distance of the Pyramid, this field tends to fill up fairly quite quickly on the Wednesday. Also, try avoiding making camp near the “Muddy Lane” path which usually tends to get quite busy – as a rule of thumb, try not to set up your tent on the edge of any campsite, for that matter.

The quickest way to arrive at this field would be via Pedestrian Gate B, with Gate C also being a viable option.

PROs

  • Close to the Pyramid Stage.
  • Picturesque views of the festival site.
  • On higher ground which means no flooding in case of rain.
  • Good amount of toilet/water points close by.
  • Quieter area come night-time for those who like a good night’s sleep.

CONs

  • This and the neighbouring fields on the hill tend to fill up considerably fast on the Wednesday so your best chance of securing this prime piece of real estate is if you arrive early on VERY early – You snooze. You lose.

SUMMARY

Perfect if you plan on hanging out by the Pyramid stage and want to be close to the action (or indeed the cider bus) for the majority of your time there. Unless you turn up on the Wednesday to secure your spot, you can pretty much forget about it.
