As a festival lover, I am filled with excitement for the next edition of Glastonbury Festival. Having lived in Pilton for over 12 years – building yurts with my family, I have witnessed the magic of the festival first-hand. It’s a time when the village of Pilton comes alive, filling the area with people from all walks of life, all united by their love for music, art, and community.

For the first time in 2023, my partner Ben and I were thrilled to extend a brand new offering for festival-goers – Inner Sanctum, a private campsite nestled amongst the beautiful Somerset countryside. Being right here at the centre of it all gives us a unique edge. As an independent, family-run business, we are excited to bring our knowledge and wisdom of festival life to create a truly original offering.

We know the area like the back of our hands, and we’ve seen the festival grow and evolve over the years. It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re excited to share our love and knowledge of the festival with you once again in 2024. We’ve often said, when the festival ‘build’ starts to take place across the valley, we should set up a time-lapse camera, because the way it grows and grows and becomes more colourful from far, is truly astounding. You can even feel the energy grow too!

After being lucky enough to attend the festival a few times when we were in our late teens / early twenties, we started our true Glastonbury journey in 2008, when we worked in the Greencrafts Field, organised and managed by Nic and Marie Piper. The Greencrafts Field is still running today and is one of the most popular areas of the festival – our favourite for sure! It’s a place where you can learn forgotten skills and crafts, and it has the most incredible community feel. It was only in recent years that our children knew that ‘famous’ people came to Glastonbury: their world has always been in the Greencrafts field.

Now, they are at the age where we can hold hands and run down to the stages to see their favourite artists. You could say that the festival has grown with them. Each year, when the time feels right, we get to explore more and more with the children, and as they get older, the experiences get more and more exciting for them.

The value of the Greencrafts Field is immeasurable, and it’s a testament to the festival’s commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness. At Greencrafts, you learn how to make things from scratch, how to work with your hands, and how to be self-sufficient. These are skills that are often forgotten in our modern world, but they are incredibly valuable. We’re excited to bring some of that ethos to Inner Sanctum – creating a sustainable campsite was very important to us.

Our children – Iôna, Maya and Fox – have flourished from being involved in the festival – watching them grow with it has been magical. Festivals are a place where children can run wild and free, explore new things, and make memories that will last a lifetime. We believe that festivals are a unique and valuable learning experience for children, and we’re excited to share that with our guests at Inner Sanctum.

How did we get here? In the summer of 2009, when I was 7 months pregnant with Iôna – our first child – and was feeling the call to nest. At the time, we had been living on the road – travelling from festival to festival and running workshops wherever we went. When confiding in the wonderful Amanda (who runs the Willow Weaving workshops in the Greencraft field), she pointed across the valley of the festival to a beautiful field, with just a log cabin and a few other folks living in their creative homes. Amanda suggested that may be the spot. Without any hesitation, Ben jumped on a bike and cycled across the festival to speak with the landowner. Although it wasn’t available right away, by the turn of the year we were in our new home in Pilton.

Our family business, Woodsmoke Yurts, has now been building yurts for nearly 13 years here. We take great pride in our work; we are hand-building all the yurts for Inner Sanctum, so you can be sure that they are of the highest quality and made with a lot of love.

Guests of Inner Sanctum can expect much more than just a place to sleep. We have created a haven amongst the party, with a focus on well-being and relaxation. Our Yurt Restaurant, with catering from Sri Lankan food vendor Ceylon & Beyond, will offer a unique dining experience, while our private bar run by Merry Hare will serve up a range of drinks to suit all tastes.

As someone who has spent many a festival surviving on a diet of chips and burgers, I am thrilled at the prospect of our Yurt Restaurant serving up delicious Sri Lankan cuisine. It’s the perfect fuel for a long day of dancing and exploring the festival site.

The fire pit will be the place for all to get together. It will be another cosy spot to gather around and share stories with fellow festival-goers, and our yurt lounge will be the perfect place to unwind after a long day of dancing and exploring.

One of the standout features of Inner Sanctum is our Dressing-up Parlour, complete with onsite hair stylists and makeup artists. Festival-goers can fully embrace their inner creativity and transform themselves into whatever character they desire, becoming festival-ready with the help of our creative team.

And after a day of dancing and exploring, we have complimentary hot tubs and a sauna to help you unwind and relax. Inner Sanctum isn’t just about the creature comforts. We have created a truly authentic experience for our guests – to help them make the absolute most of the Festival.

As a family-run business, we understand the importance of community and connection. We want Inner Sanctum to be a place where festival-goers can come together, share stories, and make new friends. We have created a well-being area, with massages and other treatments available, to help guests take care of their physical and mental health during their time at the festival. Our Wellbeing Area is proving to be more amazing each day! With more and more ideas coming into the mix, from body art, to Shiatsu, hair, make-up and nails, to Indian head massage and our wood-fired yurt sauna!
