EE builds 4G network in preparation for “most shared” Glastonbury ever

4G network EE Glastonbury Festival

Glastonbury’s EE 4G network set to be the UK’s biggest and most powerful temporary 4G network

This year’s Glastonbury Festival is predicted to be the “most shared” live event of 2017, with EE estimating festival goers will consume 40 terabytes of data across the weekend, which is a third more than 2016 – and therefore is constructing a permanent mast at the Worthy Farm site for the first time.

For the past 5 years EE has been the official technology and communications partner for the event, and in 2016 constructed the UK’s biggest and most powerful temporary 4G network.

“Since EE first launched 4G in the UK, we’ve worked with the team at Glastonbury to give festival-goers the best possible network experience,” said Mat Sears, Director of Communications and Sponsorship at EE.

“A few years ago that meant making sure people could simply post status updates and photos, but with social media continuing its rapid growth … those on site now require more data for video than ever before.”

Free recharge tents containing wired charging stations will be available to the 135,000 festival-goers at Worthy Farm, as well as wireless charging stations that will be introduced to the site for the first time this year. There is also the option to purchase a power bar and swap it at these tents for £20.

“Our customers will be able to treat their friends at home by sharing all of the thrilling behind-the-scenes stuff that Glastonbury has to offer over our superfast 4G network, and we’re incredibly excited to be able to help make that happen,” added Sears.

Radiohead, Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran will headline Glastonbury Festival, along with the likes of Blossoms, Biffy Clyro and The National.
