Could Stormzy be set for a Glastonbury 2019 headline slot?

Earlier today (Thursday, August  23), Grime heavyweight, Stormzy, posted an Instagram Story of what looked like the old Noel Gallagher quote from when Jay-Z was announced as one of the three Glastonbury Festival headliners back in 2008 (see below).

The post echoes the former Oasis legend Noel Gallagher’s famous remarks upon hearing Jay-Z was to headline Glasto back in 2008: “No, I’m not havin’ hip hop at Glastonbury. F**kin’ no chance!”

This quote is in context from an interview Noel did at the time with the NME, where he stated it was “wrong” for Jay-Z to be headlining Glastonbury – saying: “Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go ‘Kylie Minogue?’ I don’t know about it. But I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.”

Stormzy has a history with Glastonbury Festival, attending the last two festivals (2016, 2017) – in the latter of which he made a bigger impact.

Playing to a crowd of just a few hundred people back in 2016 at the Silver Hayes area, Stormzy’s popularity kept on growing, as did the Grime genre wich kept gaining ground, just in time for his Other Stage performance at Glastonbury 2017.

The award-winning Grime and hip-hop artist took to the Other Stage at last year’s Glastonbury Festival, for what not only turned out to be a fantastic performance.

Stormzy’s 2017 performance made headlines not only for it being packed to the rafters but also for featuring an impassioned and heartfelt speech about the Grenfell fire. Not to mention creating the largest moshpit in Glastonbury history, while concluding his performance with ‘Shut Up’ which turned into a delirious singalong.

There have been numerous rumours circulating of the Grime artist headlining Glastonbury for quite some time now. Speaking about last year’s Glastonbury final day, Emily Eavis went on to big up Stormzy for his phenomenal gig on the Other Stage by saying: “I think Stormzy will definitely have to headline one day. He was phenomenal, and if anything has come through in quite an obvious way, it’s that. That was such a great moment.”

Glastonbury Festival is set to return to Worthy Farm Wednesday, June 26, 2019, and run till Sunday, June 30 – with Glastonbury Festival curator, Emily Eavis, also mentioning that tickets will go on sale round about October.
