Whether you’re a seasoned groover or just wish you could bust a move, the Theatre & Circus iconic flashmob at Glastonbury Festival is your chance to shine!

Announcing the news yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, 11 June), it was revealed that this year’s flashmob will be led once again by Bristol’s own dance dynamo, Lauren Filer (aka Lala) and her ExElle Dance crew, with a high-energy routine set to Nile Rodgers and Chic’s funky classic, Le Freak. It’s easy to learn, ridiculously fun, and open to everyone — whether you’re at the festival or boogying from your living room.

The flashmob kicks off on Thursday (26th June) at 4:00 PM at The Gateway in the Theatre and Circus fields, where you should be ready to turn up and dance! However, after the flashmo happens, Lala usually follows it with a run-through step by step for people who don’t know it yet. The big moment then comes on Sunday at 6:00 PM, when festival-goers and the Pyramid Stage crowd will join Nile Rodgers and Chic for a massive dance party.

Can’t make it to Glastonbury? No problem! You’re invited to join in from home, work, or anywhere else — just post your moves on social media with #GlastoFlashmob.

“It’s a chance to be part of what has become a wonderful festival tradition, even from the comfort of your sofa at home,” Theatre and Circus organiser Haggis McLeod wrote on the Glastonbury Festival website. “You don’t need to be on-site to feel the magic — just grab your mates, learn the steps, and dance along from your sofa!”

“I have made it super simple but really fun and high energy!” says Lauren, aka Lala, of ExElle Dance. “Le Freak is such a great, high-energy, catchy tune that I wanted to make the choreo reflect that! I’d love to see everyone’s version! It’s super funky!”

This year marks the tenth consecutive flashmob, which is presented by the Theatre and Circus fields as a collective dance for the whole festival, and Lauren is hoping lots of people will join in.

“The Thursday showing is always such a laugh — you never know what to expect! Last year, we even had a stag join us on stage! Watching the field fill up as people hear the song and see the moves is pure magic. And then there’s Sunday… I mean, who would have thought it? Dancing with a special artist on the Pyramid Stage, seeing a sea of people doing your dance — our dance — everyone’s dance. It’s an unforgettable experience. The adrenaline, the smiles, the connection… there’s nothing like it.”

Past flashmobs honoured artists Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Barry Gibb, Kylie, Diana Ross, Rick Astley and Shania Twain. The 2016 Starman flashmob, choreographed by Fez Fa’anana of Briefs Factory, was particularly moving as a tribute to the late David Bowie.

Each year, the security team at the Pyramid get involved, bridging the gap between the stage and the audience, and creating a unique spectacle. Specialised Security Chief Executive Kara Williamson says they love it.

“The whole team were delighted when they were asked way back in 2014, and now look forward to entertaining the crowd with their dance moves; it’s the highlight of their weekend on the Pyramid Stage,” said Kara, while adding: ”I am so proud the team have embraced this amazing event and put so much effort in, but some of their dance moves leave a lot to be desired, lol.”

These days, some members of the Pyramid medical team are joining security in the pit, which begs the question: What does Kara think about challenging other teams around the festival to get involved? “I think it’s a brilliant idea — bring it on! Why not have Pyramid vs. Everyone Else?”

Adding to the fun, Glastonbury’s charity bin painters, led by Daniel Glastonbury, have been a flashmob staple since the first Dollymob in 2014. “Teaching 100 bin painters the flash mob begins with me practising by myself in my caravan, then all the bin painters get themselves glammed up and we slowly go through it step by step three times,” Daniel says.

“It’s always somewhat chaotic, but it’s a festival tradition that everyone loves,” he added. Keep an eye out for their video, which drops on social media a few days before the festival gates open — a sure sign the party’s about to start.

Choreographer Lala couldn’t agree more; “The energy is always amazing”, she said, while emphasising that “there’s something so special about creating such an iconic moment — it’s a feeling like no other. It touches my heart every time I see people join in. I honestly have to pinch myself: They’re doing it!”
